ACC Regents Approve Agreement for Crane Certification

The Alvin Community College Board of Regents approved an agreement to begin offering certification training for crane operators during their meeting on January 9.

Regents approved a memorandum of understanding to create a partnership with the National Crane Certification and Inspection Company in order to offer courses in crane rigging and inspection. The partnership will provide training that will give workers a chance to improve their skills and meet the needs of local industry.

“This is a very unique program,” said board secretary Patty Hertenberger. “This will pull a lot of interest to the college from business and industry.”

Under the terms of the agreement, the college will provide the facilities, program oversight, marketing support and student registration for the training courses. The company will provide the instruction, the equipment, the certifications and the curriculum for the program.

Job growth projections for crane operators in the region are expected to increase by 4.5 percent over the next five years. Operators can make about $70,000 a year.

In other action, regents heard a report on the current Strategic Plan to increase institutional completion rates and persistence rates. Between 2021-22 school year and 2023-24, the Fall to Spring persistence rates have increased 4 percent while the completion outcomes in that same time frame is 6 percent.

Administrators attributed the increases to many factors including expanded recruitment efforts.

During the meeting, regents also:

-approved an interlocal purchasing cooperative agreement

-approved contract for the purchase of fencing on campus

-approved Board Policy Update 48

-approved purchase of an online proctoring tool

-received report on Student Services data

-discussed guidelines for naming facilities

-approved monthly financial reports

The board will have its next meeting on February 20 at 6 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center.
