ACC Serves Up Volleyball Team

With the 50th anniversary of its national title, Alvin Community College returned to the court with the recent establishment of the club volleyball team this Fall.
The team hosted its first game against Texas Southern University on September 18 and won the match.
“We’re thrilled to bring volleyball back to Alvin Community College,” ACC Athletic Director Dr. Estevan Vasquez said. “This club sport not only promotes teamwork and dedication but also taps into the rich pool of local talent while honoring ACC’s history as a national champion many decades ago.”
Fitness Center manager Alissa Rios was tapped to lead the club team.
It's incredible how quickly our players have bonded,” Rios said. “It seems like they've been playing together for years already. Not only are the players excited, but the student body has also shown enthusiasm for the volleyball team, which is amazing.”
ACC previously had a volleyball program at the college that competed in NJCAA and won a national title in 1974. The program was closed in 2008.
Bringing volleyball back as a club sport has brought enthusiasm to the campus and students are energized about the new program, Vasquez said.
“Our goal is to provide students with even more opportunities for involvement—whether through student clubs, recreation, or club sports,” he said. “This effort is part of a broader mission to enhance student engagement and offer new platforms for students to showcase their talents, foster lifelong learning, and stay connected to their community.”
Resurrecting the team will also create a bond with the community and provide opportunities for students to become involved, Rios said.
“I believe in the power of teamwork, growth, and the unique opportunities it provides our students who want to continue their education while staying competitively active,” she said. “We cannot wait to see how our team grows together and the excitement it will generate among our supporters."
The team will play its next match on Tuesday, September 25 against Lone Star College-Kingwood at 7 p.m. Their next match at home will be against University of Houston-Downtown on October 9 at 7 p.m.
