BC Summer Jazz Band to perform on July 3 at the Clarion
 
LAKE JACKSON —The Brazosport College Department of Music will host a Summer Jazz Concert by the Brazosport College Summer Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3. The concert is free and will be held at The Clarion at Brazosport College.
 
“Come kick off your Fourth of July celebration early with some of America’s classical music: jazz. We’ll be playing everything from jazz classics to brand new selections for contemporary jazz ensemble,” said BC Jazz Band Director Richard Birk. “There will be a little something for everybody.”

Some of the selections to be performed by the BC Summer Jazz Band on July 3 include:


“Strike Up the Band” — George Gershwin’s up-tempo flag waver.
 
“Star Eyes” — This 1940s-era classic from the Great American Songbook has a fresh modern setting by Rick Hirsch.
 
“It Wasn’t You” — An original jazz waltz from the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors.
 
“Straighten Up & Fly Right” — Vocalist Emmie Dodson will be featured on this swinging novelty number originally performed by Nat King Cole.
 
“Alma Caribeña” — A fun soca-based Latin chart written by Bob Washut and commissioned by the Jazz Education Network.
 
“American Patrol” — Glenn Miller’s patriotic World War II hit.
 
“Patriotic Medley” — a Big Band medley of patriotic favorites that includes “Yankee Doodle,” “America,” “You’re A Grand Old Flag” and “America the Beautiful.”
 
“Mr. Big” — A hard-driving swing original by Rich Woolworth.
 
“The Next Chapter” — A terrific, contemporary original by Patty Darling.
 
“Slim Chickens” — A funky original by Dallas-based composer Kris Berg.
 
“Just A Closer Walk” — A traditional New Orleans classic.
 
“Unchain My Heart” — Vocalist Leelan Jackson will be featured on this 1961 hit by Ray Charles.
 
“My Favorite Things” — A brand new Latin/Swing arrangement by Michell Fernandez of this iconic song from “The Sound of Music.”
