Local speakers share expertise with Brazosport College SHEM class
 
 
LAKE JACKSON — Brazosport College Safety, Health and Environmental Management (SHEM) Instructor Sam Chamberlain provided students in his Special Topics in Occupational Safety and Health Technology/Technician (OSHT 1191) class some expert opinion and analysis by bringing in guest speakers throughout the semester.


Through the special topics course, Chamberlain welcomed seven different speakers to provide a perspective on the practical side of safety and environmental.
 
In addition, students were required to research a safety or environmental incident and deliver a presentation to local industry executives that serve on the college’s SHEM Advisory Committee.
 
The Special Topics course was recommended by the SHEM Advisory Committee.
 
The guest speakers included: 
Jorge Gomez — An OSHA Compliance Assistance Officer, Gomez gave a presentation on current OSHA statistics for this area. As a compliance assistance officer, Gomez is called to many chemical companies and refineries to advise them on how to improve their safety compliance programs and efforts. 
 
Brent Cooper — A member of the BC Library staff, Cooper provided guidance on how students can utilize the library resources to complete their term project and how the library is always available to support students. Cooper also focused on how the library is supporting AI efforts for students.
 
Leslie Cancion — As Lake Jackson Health Inspector, Cancion provided an inside look at the health inspector responsibilities and gave some unusual scenarios she has dealt with in Lake Jackson. 


John Buchanan – As the Safety Director with Oates Construction in Houston, Buchanan provided a practical perspective on the daily activities of a safety manager. He also highlighted the need to network with other safety professionals and develop a close working relationship with operating personnel, such as plant operators, supervisors and managers.
 
Barbara Jasso-Luna — A graduate from Brazosport College’s Safety, Health and Environment Management program and employed by Total Safety, Jasso-Luna gave a presentation about the opportunities for women in the safety profession. She described her career path, from a data entry clerk to a safety manager, and the value of earning an Associate degree in Safety, Health and Environmental Management from Brazosport College.
 
Deanna Lambert — Lambert, Vice President of Operations/Safety, Health and the Environment from Marquis Construction, highlighted her progress from a construction laborer to vice president. Lambert talked about the need for a positive attitude, never giving up, the ability to accept new challenges, and the importance of staying focused on one’s goals. She encouraged women to enter the safety field.
 
Rhonda Shay- Shay has been an adjunct at Brazosport College for several years after retiring from a Human Resources executive position with an industry partner. Shay is a lawyer and provided significant insight for students who will eventually go through the job interview process, covering some key topics of elevator speeches, dressing for success, interview basics, resume preparation and several other crucial keys for successful interviews.
