ACC Regent Kam Marvel Steps Down from Board

After attending Alvin Community College as a first-generation student and watching the college impact members of his family, Kam Marvel felt he had to serve the college in some role.
“My wife and I both attended and were both first-generation students,” he said. “My sons also went through the Dual Enrollment program. ACC has changed the trajectory of many generations of my family.”
Marvel decided to run for Position 1 on ACC Board of Regents and was elected in 2018.
“I felt an obligation to serve this community,” he said. “I owed so much to ACC because it has given me so much.”
After serving six years on the Alvin Community College Board of Regents, Kam Marvel opted to not seek reelection. He started attending ACC in 1991 and would go on to earn his Associate’s Degree in General Studies.
When Marvel was elected to the board, the college was evaluating the possibility of exploring a Maintenance Note project. He supported the project which brought much-needed improvements to campus facilities and infrastructure.
Marvel also served on the board during the effects of the COVID pandemic.
“I’m glad that we approved the maintenance tax note to help improve the campus,” he said. “I’m also proud of our decisions during COVID to ensure our students were safe and still receiving an education.”
While also on the board Marvel supported other initiatives to expand online and hybrid instruction, adding new programs for students, meeting a fiscal goal for institutional reserves while also undergoing the challenge of bringing in a new president.
“We, as a board, were not stagnant and we were willing to make this college better for the students and the community,” he said. “I feel like we ushered in a new era to continue to do great things for the college.”
Regent Breah Knape took the oath of office for Position 1 on May 14.
