Alvin College Phi Theta Kappa Spring Induction
The Mu Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Alvin College held its Spring induction ceremony on April 30.
The chapter inducted 44 new members during the ceremony. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year colleges.
Alvin College Associate Provost Dr. Leigh Ann Moore spoke during the event and credited the Phi Theta Kappa honors society for inspiring him as a student.
“Tonight is a celebration not only of these students’ academic achievement but a commitment to character and a promise of what each of you will contribute to our college and beyond,” Moore said. “This moment reflects what you’ve already done and the potential you carry forward. We are proud of what you’ve done.”
The Spring class for Mu Upsilon is the largest class ever inducted into the honors society.
“Phi Theta Kappa at Alvin College serves all of our students,” said Amy Acord, Government instructor and Phi Theta Kappa advisor. “We are a friendly and supportive space for high academic achievers, people who are seeking new beginnings and second chances to realize their academic potential.”
Members follow four hallmarks, including scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.  To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa, students must have completed at least 12 college credit hours at Alvin College and maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Research has shown members of Phi Theta Kappa have a 91 percent success rate in college.
More than 4,000 Alvin College students have been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa since the Alvin College Mu Upsilon Chapter was created in 1963. Students in Phi Theta Kappa will participate in community projects and research projects during their time in the organization.
