Alvin College Celebrates Commencement
Alvin College celebrated its annual Commencement Ceremony on May 8 at Freedom Field.
There were 475 graduates who walked the stage during the ceremony including some of the first graduates from the Bachelor’s of Business Administration and Management Degree program. The ceremony also included Dual Degree graduates from high schools in Alvin, Pearland and Danbury ISDs.
“Commencement is one of the most meaningful occasions of the academic year,” President Robert J. Exley said during the ceremony. “Whether you are entering the workforce or continuing your education, this moment marks the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with opportunity, responsibility and promise.”
Alvin ISD Superintendent and Alvin College alum Carol Nelson delivered the Commencement address. Nelson started her education with Alvin College and would then go on to become an educator herself, serving as a teacher, then principal and eventually named the Alvin ISD superintendent.
“I was determined to move forward with my goals,” at Alvin College, she said. “This is an achievement that will ripple through your lives and through the lives of those you love.”
Nelson told the graduates that a college education is a key step in a student’s journey towards success in their career and in life.
“You came to this moment from many different places,” she said. “You all carried with you one thing common, the decision to invest in you and your future. College is a place of possibility, where determination is forged into opportunity.”
Nelson was given a Distinguished Alumni award from President Exley following her address.
