ACC Foundation Supports Launch of Student Magazine

The Alvin Community College Communications Department hopes to start the presses after receiving a grant for a student-led magazine about events happening at the college.
“One of the things I hope to accomplish is understand what it takes to print a magazine,” said Denise Bates, ACC Communications instructor. “I want students to learn content creation, writing in a certain format and knowing your audience.”
Bates received a $1,600 grant from the ACC Foundation to assist with the costs of printing the magazine.
The grant was awarded through the Foundation’s Innovative Initiative program which is designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative approaches to fulfill the mission of the college. The grants will be used for the 2025-26 academic year.
Starting in the Fall, students in the Communications and the Arts Department will begin working together to create content. In the Spring, editing and layout students will draft a layout of the magazine to be printed and disseminated.
“When the magazines are printed, we hope to place them in different places around campus and the community,” Bates said. “We want to give students some exposure as well as exposure for ACC.”
The college will partner with Community Impact Newspapers staff members who will assist in the magazine’s development.
“She will serve as an advisor and speak to the students about the process,” Bates said. “I am really excited about it.”
