ACC Foundation Grant to Assist with TSI Prep

ACC Foundation Grant to Assist with TSI Prep

Before a student can begin their journey in higher education, most will have to take the Texas Success Initiative entrance exam to determine their readiness.
A $2,000 grant from the Alvin Community College Foundation will provide a preparatory course for those seeking to take the exam.
“We want to make sure the student is fully prepared to take on college-level classes and be successful,” said Amanda Smithson, ACC director of Enrollment and Recruitment. “The point of the grant is to provide additional tutoring services to these students to help them get to the developmental level.”
The grant was awarded through the Foundation’s Innovative Initiative program. The Innovative Initiative Grant program is designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative approaches to fulfill the mission of the college. The grants will be used for the 2024-25 academic year.
Knowing a student’s capabilities is an important step to starting on the right foot with their education. The scores determine whether a student must take developmental education to be ready for college.
“The exam measures their ability to perform at a college level in language arts and math,” Smithson said. “It helps us determine where they should be placed.”
The prep course and tutoring will be made available through the ACC Learning Lab. Once students complete the preparation, they will receive a voucher for the TSI exam.
“They get the opportunity to work with our staff on the skills they need to brush up on,” she said. “Once they complete the tutoring, they can retake the TSI for free.”
