FREEPORT, TX (September 4, 2025) – House Bill 1729, which establishes term limits for members of the Port Freeport Commission, went into effect on September 1, 2025. The bill, co-authored by Representative Cody Vasut and Representative Jeff Barry, was written at the request of the Port Commission, which unanimously approved a resolution calling for its passage.
Under the new law, individuals who have served two full terms as a Port Freeport commissioner will no longer be eligible for re-election. However, any time served to complete an unexpired term due to a vacancy will not count towards this term limit. This legislation will only apply to terms that begin after the effective date.
“Term limits have broad community support, and I believe this new law strikes a good balance between the goal of fresh ideas and perspectives and the need for continuity and stability,” stated Rob Giesecke, Chairman of the Port Freeport Commission. “As Port Freeport continues to grow and expand its role in global commerce, operating with transparency, accountability, and public trust remains a top priority. We appreciate the work of Representative Vasut, Representative Barry, and the Texas Legislature in advancing this bill.”
