FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: (Wade Dillon – Museum Coordinator – 979-233-0066)

(FREEPORT, TEXAS) – Beginning June 7th, 2021, The Freeport Historical Museum & Visitor Center will present “FORT VELASCO,” an exclusive exhibit followed by a living history event commemorating the 189th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Velasco in 1832.

In 1827, General Mier y Terán conducted a boundary report of the northern Mexican territory of Texas. After several years of American & European immigration into Texas from the United States under the empresario system, Terán expressed deep concerns of losing Texas to revolution.

Terán’s report inspired the Mexican government to eventually pass the Law of 1830 which created great unrest amongst Texian colonists. Mexican forts were established along the Texas Gulf Coast to enforce the law’s provisions. Thus, Fort Velasco was built at the mouth of the Brazos River in the spring of 1832.

As Mexico struggled over its’ political identity as a young republic, the people of Texas aligned themselves with their ideologies and prepared for war.

“FORT VELASCO” is an exclusive exhibit created by the museum staff at the Freeport Historical Museum & Visitor Center. Illustrated panels and original artifacts will guide visitors through the politics, personalities, and conflicts of 1832. The exhibit will run from June 7th to August 31st.

“FORT VELASCO DAY”, the living history event, will be held on Saturday, June 26th, at the Freeport Historical Museum and Memorial Park from 9am to 4pm. Living Historians from other museum institutions and across the state will be dressed in period Texian clothing and Mexican Army uniforms to perform demonstrations and help visitors visualize what life was like in 1830s Texas.
